Darcy makes waves at Teenage Rampage

Pambula Beach youngster Darcy Piper is making waves around the surfing fraternity after his standout performance to finish third at the Macca's Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage held at Moruya last weekend.

Darcy's performance in the under 13s division was outstanding.

Culburra surfer Michael Wright claimed first place from Matt King of Ulladulla, but it was Darcy who caught the eye of organisers who believe he has a big future in the sport.

Over 90 competitors, hailing from Kiama to the Victorian border, surfed in four divisions - girls and boys 13 and under and girls and boys 16 and under over the course of the competition.

Contest director and Ocean & Earth team rider Phil Macdonald was ecstatic with the outcome of the event.

"Both the event and the level of surfing have definitely improved in leaps and bounds from last year. All the kids are definitely the pushing the level of surfing down here," he said.

Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage - Sixteen Surfers Advance Into Finals; Keoni Wins Under 12 Division
Sunday, 30 December 2007

Sunny skies and small but contestable conditions heralded the start to Day 3 of the Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage which saw the business end of the U12 and U14 boys as well as the U13, U16 and U20 girls divisions, in full swing.

Wave selection and positioning proved critical at Sydney's South Curl Curl beach, forcing surfers to out-paddle and out-manoeuvre one another to secure a spot in the Final.

The premier U20 girls division saw South African U14 Champion Bianca Buitendag (Wilderness) and former South African, now Australian resident, Phillipa Anderson (Merewether) rise to the top the heat draw, advancing into the Finals.

Buitendag looked exceptionally light on her feet, her petite frame well suited to the waves at South Curl Curl where she proved a tough competitor for Australian U18 champion, Laura Evener (North Narabeen) who advanced in second.

Anderson meanwhile, wasted no time in stamping her authority on Semifinal Heat 2 when she defeated Kirstie Jones (NSW) who advanced in second, while Rhianna Loudher (NSW) and Bijuo Busse (Jap) where eliminated from the event.

In the U16 Girls Semifinals it was Japan's Nao Oomura who proved tough to beat, her superior wave selection earning her a first place finish over Enever who advanced in the runner-up spot, securing her second Final berth of the day.

Tyler Wright posted the highest wave score of the day, her powerful snaps earning her an excellent 8.5 (out of 10.00) from the judging panel to defeat Gemma Sauders (NSW) who advanced in second.

The U14 boys Semifinals saw an outstanding performance from local Sydney surfer Cooper Chapman (Narabeen) who added his name to the Final heat draw by defeating NSW State Champion Matt Bunting (Port Macquarie). Banting advanced in second place while early event standout Micheal February (South Africa) was eliminated in third.

Josh Hay (NSW) did well to defeat Rip Curl Gromsearch Finalists Connor O'Leory (NSW) and Jake Scott (NSW), Hay and O'Leory filing the last two berths in the U14 Final.

Ellie Coffey (NSW) proved unstoppable in the U13 Girls division posting excellent 8.50 and 7.50 rides, which combined earned her the highest heat score of the day. Coffey advanced out of Semifinal Heat 1 and into the Final ahead of Carli McDonagh (NSW) who advanced in second.

Laureen McAleer (NSW) advanced through Semifinal Heat 2 in first place ahead of Rose Vanderfield (NSW).

All four surfers in the U12 boys Final showed contest savvy well beyond their years but it was diminutive Tahitian surfer Yan Keoni, who managed to out surf the local contingent snatching a decisive victory over Brendon Hay (NSW), Darcy Piper (NSW) and Jordi Olsen (NSW).

“I am very happy,” Keoni admitted in broken English. “The surferss in this country are so good and I am proud to return home as the champion.”

The Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage will culminate with the Premier U20 Boys division tomorrow (Sunday), which is expected to be held in excellent 2-meter surf.

Prize giving for all divisions will take place after the Final heat is completed.

Former winners include Ben Dunn (Aus), Jordy Smith (Sth Afr) , Matt Wilkinson(Aus), Jermey Flores(Fra), Masato Nakano (Jap), James Wood (Aus), Jesse-Miley-Dyer,(Aus) , Sally Fitzgibbons(Aus).

The Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage is made possible thanks to the support - Ocean and Earth, Vodafone, Cool Shoes, Arrive/Alive , Red Bull, Byrne Surfboards, Pod TV.

July 15th comp,

G'Day All A bit of a flukey one today - not much around but a small little bank at Main that held up just long enough to run a couple of heats in each division. Results were:

* 12s: 1st Darcy Piper (consistent, strong manoeuvres) / 2nd Casey Gilbert (going well and putting some scores together)

* 14s: 1st Clancey Mills (smooth and stylish - go 'Pud') / 2nd Bobby McCormack (also progressing well) / 3rd Ed Maloney (keen as and making good progress)

* 16s: 1st Freya Prumm and Sam Tucker (good fast linked surfing for both) / 3rd Luke Price (developing sense of positioning and manoeuvres)

* 18s: 1st Kim Churchill (continuing strong development) / 2nd Lance Creighton (consistent improvement) / 3rd Megan Young (showing good gains for all the time spent in the water this year)

* Opens: 1st Aaron Price (did a fare bit with not much) / 2nd Wes Hetherington (got some good waves and flow in the smallish waves) Prizes on the day went to: Best manoeuvre: Freya Prumm (fast, linked 360) - tailpad Best Wipeout: Ed Maloney (shorey special with special mention to Wes for backflip, aerial pulloffs) - tailpad Highest heat score: Sam Tucker (14.5 out of possible 20) - leggie Freya, Ed and Sam, collect ya stuff from Dave McKill's shop.

That's all from me for a couple of months guys, catch ya all again in October. Surf strong, Dave Price

Congratulations Aaron

Surf's up

The Merimbula Boardriders hosted the inaugural South East junior development competition on Wednesday, April 25, at Main Beach, with ideal wave conditions.

The under 16s division final was tightly contested with Darcy Piper jumping onto a good scoring first wave. Rhyce Kingdom, a standout in the under 16 division, played catch-up but Darcy surfed the inside section picking up good points with nice cutbacks and reo's, taking first place.

Billy Warf, of Eden, put it to the boys, taking third place. Clancy Mills took 4th place, snapping off lips and doing some good floaters, but was unlucky with the waves.

Luke Price took 5th place after surfing consistently all day and was stoked with his effort.

The under 20s division was duelled by the kings of junior surfing in Merimbula Aaron Price and Kane McKill.

Aaron nailed nine backhand reo's on one wave. Kane smashed every wave through with his usual power, putting up huge fans of spray.

Aaron took first place from Kane by one point in the final.

Steve Butterworth surfed loose with some nice floaters showing he's up there with the best and taking out 3rd place.

4th place went to Kim Churchill with his zippy act letting all know he's on the move.

There were lots of standouts who didn't make the final, but all you Groms rip!

Thanks to local surf identities Phil Overend, Gina Graham, Jed Done and Pete Byard for giving of their time to judge all day, and to Jodie Cronk the best time-keeper yet.

Thanks also to Pete Tucker for the beautiful etched glass trophies presented to the first place getters.

The event would not have come to fruition without the efforts and enthusiasm of Dave McKill and Dave Price.

Thanks to Wolfie for capturing the day so well with his camera.

We would also like to thank our competition sponsors who were all very generous with their support.

Local surfers star at Broulee.

Freya Prumm, Sam Tucker, Clancy Mills, Casey Gilbert, Edward Molony and [front] Darcy Piper.

A group of local young surfers have returned from the Phil Macca Junior Surf Comp at Broulee on February 3 and 4 with some fantastic results.

There were some great conditions for the surfing event, supported by surfing star Phil McDonald (ranked 12th in the world).

Saturday produced sunshine and good surfable waves and on Sunday, there were two-foot average waves with a light onshore breeze.

Pambula surfer Freya Prumm surfed with brilliance with her backhand attack, snaps, floaters and sheer speed.

Freya scored the highest point score of the day and was the stand-out in the Under 16 girls.

Going into Sunday, Freya won her third heat and went into the final as the favourite, but the waves went a bit weird, and finding it difficult to nail a rideable wave, Freya finished in third position in the final. Well done Freya.

Under 16 boy Sam Tucker surfed with determination on both days, wacking lips and grovelling all the way to the beach which scored him very well for a kid who has been surfing just two years - you rip Sam!

Under 13 boy Clancy Mills put in a great effort as always with a couple of floaters and a very impressive controlled tail-slide showing off his great talent, but just missing out on the final - on ya Clancy!

Under 13 boy Casey Gilbert, the big improver of the summer, turned and made some good manoeuvres and scored well. Casey was just frothing all weekend!

Darcy Piper amazed even himself surfing rock-solid with good backhand snaps, floaters, and some great cut backs impressing the judges and scoring well on both days. What a buzz for Darcy to make it to the final and finish second in the Under 13 boys. Great effort champ!

Our groms owe their great backhand skills to the Merimbula Bar.

What a great weekend for our surfers and their families. Ocean and Earth and Phil MacDonald and crew put on a kid-friendly contest with great competition from surfers from Kiama to the Victorian border.

It was an exciting and very generous contest with lots of food, drinks, show bags, prizes and trophies.

This comp has provided a major boost for competitive surfers on the South Coast and our club looks forward to taking another strong contingent to Maccas Teenage Rampage again next year.

Keep Rippin'
